Please note that the position is 100% remote and we are open for candidates from around the world.
Severalnines provides automation and management software for open source database clusters. We help companies deploy their databases in any environment, and manage all operational aspects to achieve high availability at scale. We're headquartered in Kalmar, Sweden, and work fully remotely from home offices around the world. Join us and help build the next generation of cloud services and automation for SQL and NoSQL open-source databases — on-premises or in the cloud.
Position overview
Severalnines is looking for a seasoned QA engineer to lead the test architecture for our on-premise flagship product, and who isn't afraid to get hands-on. We want someone who enjoys designing test scenarios and building the most efficient test matrix to raise the product's quality to the next level — someone who believes QA's scope goes well beyond writing E2E tests in the Web UI, and is just as comfortable validating behavior at the API, service, and backend level. This role requires programming skills to directly contribute to and extend our automated testing infrastructure. You must be comfortable using Bash and Python. We'd love to see you share our interest in databases.
Responsibilities
- Set technical direction for testing the backend of our on-premise product
- Design, develop, and execute automation scripts using open source tools
- Estimate, prioritize, plan, and coordinate testing activities
- Create detailed, well-structured test plans and test cases
- Identify, record, and track bugs
- Evaluate the UI/UX of new features with the same rigor as backend behavior — catching usability issues and inconsistencies, not just functional defects
- Work closely with developers throughout feature development, giving early, clear feedback to shape the implementation rather than only validating it at the end
- Stay up to date with new testing tools and strategies
What we're looking for
- 5+ years of proven experience in software quality assurance
- Strong knowledge of software QA methodologies, tools, and processes
- Solid hands-on experience in test automation and scripting with Python
- Linux background (administration, Bash)
- Solid understanding of relational and NoSQL databases
- Experience writing clear, detailed, well-structured test plans and test cases
- Experience with virtualization and/or containerization platforms (e.g. Incus/LXC, libvirt/virsh, VMware, VirtualBox)
- Great attention to detail on UI and user experience — you notice what's inconsistent, unclear, or awkward for the end user, not just what's broken
- Strong sense of accountability — you own quality outcomes, not just test execution
- Good communication skills, with the ability to iterate closely with developers on a feature as it's being built
- A strong team player who is comfortable working in an Agile environment and willing to contribute to improving team processes and ways of working
- Good written/spoken English
Nice to have
- Prior hands-on experience with any of the database engines we support: MySQL/MariaDB (including Galera Cluster), PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Redis, or ClickHouse
- Willingness to embrace AI tools to improve software quality, adapt testing approaches to the AI era, and build more efficient and well-optimized testing pipelines
- Experience with test management tools such as TestRail or similar
- Experience with Continuous Integration/Delivery tools (Jenkins, or similar)
- Experience with Jira, Confluence, or similar
- Experience with Gherkin-based BDD tools like Cucumber or similar
- Experience with Git
- Ability to understand C++ code
